What to write on a cake for the most common occasions

Notice what these have in common. Every one of them is short enough that the letters can be piped at a size you can actually read, and short enough that the eye takes it in at once. A cake with eleven words on it looks busy before anybody cuts it.

How much text actually fits

The house cake is 1 kg and serves eight to ten people. The top of a cake that size holds roughly four to six short words in comfortable lettering. Push past that and two things happen: the letters shrink, and the line spacing has to tighten, so the message starts to look like a note rather than a decoration.

If you have more to say, there are better places to put it. The side of the cake can take a second short line, a name on top sits well with a date on the board, and a long message belongs in the card, read aloud before the cutting.
