The reason a kilogram sounds small and eats large is that cake is dense. A celebration cake is sponge plus filling plus icing, and a slice that looks modest on the plate is a real portion. People routinely over-order because they picture a thin wedge and imagine going hungry.

When to order two cakes instead of one

Order a second cake when any of these is true.

You have more than twelve guests. You want two flavours on the table, which is common when children want chocolate and the adults want pineapple. Getting it home in one piece in Budapest

A one-kilogram cake in a box is not heavy, but it is awkward, and Budapest transport has opinions about it. Carry it flat and level. On the 4–6 tram, hold the box on your lap rather than balancing it on a seat, because the tram brakes harder than you expect.
