An African Table for New Year in Budapest

Party trays of Kenyan pilau and stew prepared for a New Year's Eve table in Budapest

New year party food in Budapest is easiest when the hot dishes arrive in trays and you only assemble the cold ones. Nyumbani Vibes Foods, a Kenyan home kitchen in District VII, cooks pilau ya nyama, beef and chicken stew, samosas, chapati and coconut beans in party trays, with delivery to all 23 districts. Give a day's notice for food, and a week for 31 December.

What to put on a New Year table

A New Year's Eve party has two feeding problems at once: something to pick at from ten o'clock, and something substantial once midnight has come and gone.

Kenyan celebration cooking answers both, because it was built for large groups. Pilau ya nyama is the anchor: long-grain rice cooked in spiced beef stock with browned onions, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves. It holds its heat in a covered tray and can be eaten standing up with a fork.

Kachumbari goes beside it — raw tomato, red onion, coriander and lime, doing the job that pickles do on a Hungarian plate.

For the picking hours, samosas. The Kenyan sambusa comes with beef or vegetable filling, folded into a triangle and fried crisp, and is perfectly good cold at one in the morning. Chapati earns its place too: soft, layered flatbread you can roll around a spoon of stew and eat without a plate.

If your guests expect lentils and virsli at midnight, keep them. A tray of pilau next to a pot of lentil soup is a normal sight here.

How much new year party food to order per guest

This is a planning guide, not a price list. Prices are quoted per order in forint — send your list and you get the total the same day.

  1. Decide whether there is a main dish. If pilau or rice with stew is the centre of the night, count 150–200 g of uncooked rice and 200–250 g of stew per guest. For twenty guests that is 3–4 kg of rice before cooking.
  2. Count the handheld food separately. On a grazing table, three to four samosas per person is realistic; with a main dish, two is enough. For twenty guests, budget 60–80 samosas, then add ten percent — everyone eats more after midnight than they said they would.
  3. Two chapatis per guest if there is stew, one if not — forty chapatis for twenty people.
  4. Feed the vegans properly. Maharagwe ya nazi — beans simmered in coconut milk — is a complete dish with rice or ugali, not a side. Count 200 g per vegan guest, plus extra: people who did not ask for it will eat it.
  5. Finish with mandazi and chai. Two mandazi each, with ginger tea boiled with milk for the people still talking at three in the morning.

Ordering, delivery, and the Saturday rule

The kitchen is open Sunday to Friday and closed all day Saturday for the Sabbath, so if 31 December lands on a Saturday, the food is delivered on the Friday. That is not a compromise for this menu: pilau, beef stew and coconut beans all reheat well, and the stew improves overnight.

Delivery covers all 23 districts of Budapest, Buda and Pest. Collection is at Erzsébet krt. 19 in District VII, a few minutes from Blaha Lujza tér on the 4–6 tram line. Payment is by bank transfer in advance or cash on delivery.

Keep trays covered in the oven at 100°C at home; two hours is fine. Keep chapati under a tea towel instead. For a midnight cake, give three days, or a week if the colour has to be matched — a 1 kg cake serves 8–10.

One honest note: this is a home kitchen where wheat, dairy, eggs and coconut are in daily use, so a trace-free plate cannot be promised. Tell us the allergy before ordering and you get an honest answer.

Frequently asked questions

How much food should I order for a New Year's Eve party?

If pilau is the main dish, count 150–200 g of uncooked rice and about 200 g of stew per guest. For a grazing table instead, count three to four samosas, two chapatis and two mandazi per person.

How much notice do you need for New Year party food in Budapest?

A day is the normal minimum for food, but the end of December is the busiest stretch of the year. Order a week ahead for 31 December so the trays are reserved.

What if New Year's Eve falls on a Saturday?

The kitchen is closed all day Saturday for the Sabbath, so Saturday events are delivered on Friday. Stews, beans and pilau reheat well, and a beef stew is often better on day two.
